Privacy in the Pirate Age of Big Data: Navigating the Challenges

The digital world has been constantly dealing with the ethical concern of privacy regarding a user’s private data. If you piled up all the data floating in the digital world it will flow into an ocean of countless information. You may think of data being a boat, a small raft or a giant cruise storing shipping containers being drafted along the waves to another destination. Whatever may be, in an ocean there are always storms, huge tidal waves, and what might be the worst, pirates. It doesn’t matter what your boat is made of, your data can get lost in a storm, waves crashing down can turn and sink, dreadful pirates in the form of cyber attacks and hackers can steal and ravage your ship containing all your precious data. Data security doesn’t necessarily mean your data is private, but a map of what to expect can make sailing easier.

Organizations nowadays find the most value by collecting, sharing and using data. Billion dollar business frameworks like social media/online shopping algorithms and AI are prime examples of how data from clients is taken and used for business purposes. Data security focuses to protect you from hackers stealing your data for malicious intentions, but data privacy means the manner your data is gathered, kept and utilized, be wary it doesn’t automatically mean companies handle data in an ethical, lawful intent. Some apps can download all data from your address book, some track your location regardless of the agreement, and some pirate sites take track of whatever is typed to fetch passwords and other sensitive information. Clear business, that should be the transparency of any company working with sensitive data by letting the user know when and how their data is being collected and used, by whom and why.

In wake of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) was enacted to promote data transparency in the most populous U.S. state. These regulations act as the navy to businesses who have to sign off and comply with the requirements of buying, selling and using personal data. Aside from fines costing a gold coin, the importance of obeying data privacy laws are fundamentally executive. Protecting customers’ privacy and brand value/credibility are two sides of the same coin. You are the captain of that data ship as the company. Can your customers really trust you with their private data if it ends up in the wrong hands? Hence, the aspect of protecting your users goes down causing the loss of credibility and value of your brand. Data privacy regulations need to meet certain legal requirements. With these measures taken, you avoid the risk of security threats and your business won’t suffer a loss on revenue.
